USA Today has rolled out their campus-specific news app, “The Buzz,” to select college campuses in the United States. The Buzz aims to serve national, local and even campus news to its users through their university-specific apps. Oshkosh, Texas A&M and Villanova are part of the pilot campuses, with each university receiving a unique app design and customized news.
The Buzz is an attempt to reach a younger audience with more personalized news for their days. The app is interesting in that there is strong competition from existing news aggregation services such as Reddit, Digg and RSS feeds, as well as competition from existing university news services. Allowing for a personalized experience and a variety of external news sources is key towards engaging millennial students.
