General Electric (GE) may have found an on-trend solution for increasing popularity of science experiments with #EmojiScience.
In an effort to make science more engaging to younger students, GE, with the help of NYU laboratories, started the pop-up experiment #EmojiScience. The multinational conglomerate used Snapchat to send videos of live science experiments to its followers. The company then encouraged fans to send their favorite emojis to GE’s Snapchat handle, which they personally replied with a video experiment that used the fan’s specific emoji.
Even one of science’s most beloved personalities, Bill Nye The Science Guy, joined in on the fun and created his own #EmojiScience video explaining evolution. As part of the campaign, GE also unveiled an “Emoji Periodic Table of Experiments“. This new table categorizes all the emojis in different cohorts, much like the actual periodic table! But instead of elements, each emoji indicated a different simple science experiment such as Electric Pickle, Alcohol Rocket or Igniting Lead. GE’s social activation shows how leveraging trends can maximize reach and user participation.
